Human rights activists are asking the Verkhovna Rada to begin the selection of a new Ombudsman

Public human rights organizations have appealed to the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Human Rights concerning the preparation for the selection of a candidate for the post of the Commissioner for Human Rights. The Committee will consider the appeal on February 8.

It is reported by the press-service of Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union.

Human rights organizations, including UHHRU, Amnesty International and the Centre for Political Studies and Analysis “Eidos”, remind that the term of office of current Commissioner Valeriya Lutkovska will expire on April 27, 2017. Consequently, the process of selecting a new Ombudsman will begin before the specified date. In its statement, the human rights community highlights the importance of public participation in the discussion and selection of the candidate to ensure openness and transparency of the process. In its turn, the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Human Rights, National Minorities and International Relations put on the agenda the request of Public human rights organizations on preparation for the selection of the candidate for the post of the Commissioner for Human Rights on the agenda of the next meeting to be held on Wednesday, February 8, at 2.30 p.m.
