Poroshenko asks the Vekhovna Rada to support the dissolution of specialized courts

The judiciary bill provides the steps in the direction of de-politicization of the judiciary, as well as narrows the President’s influence on the judiciary. Particularly, it cancels the procedure of appointment of the judges by the President for a period of five years. He only retains the right to approve the candidacy presented for consideration of the High Council of Justice.

Petro Poroshenko emphasized this while urging Members of Parliament to support the amendments to the Constitution with regard to the judicial reform and subsequently a new edition of the Law on Judiciary.

According to the President, the reform provides radical transformation of the system of judicial immunity, “which would allow us to efficiently bring to justice corrupt judges who distort and violate justice system”.

In its turn, the new edition of the Law on Judiciary, which is likely to be proposed for consideration of the Parliament this Thursday, provides the steps in the direction of de-politicization of the judiciary, as well as narrows the President’s influence on the judiciary. This means the abolition of the aforementioned five-year appointment.

Furthermore, it also eliminates higher specialized courts , establishes a court of cassation that guarantees the observance of Ukrainian citizens’ right to justice and initiates the work of a public council at the High Council of Justice, which is to ensure the influence of the public on the transparency of the competition and nomination.
