The ombudsman has opened proceedings on the death of a young man

The Commissioner for Human Rights of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has opened proceedings on the fact of the death of a young man as a result of use of weapon by the police officers, according to the ombudsman’s press service.

As such, the ombudsman has opened proceedings on the case of violation of human rights and freedoms on the fact of the death of a minor as a result of use of firearms by the policemen during an attempt to stop the car in Kiev, on the night of February 7.

It is reported that the lawyers representing the interests of the parents of the deceased have also reached out to the Commissioner for Human Rights concerning the matter of restoring the violated rights of the deceased minor.

Considering the consequences of the use of firearms by the police officers and a widespread public response, the measures are being taken to establish the circumstances of the events, to evaluate the lawfulness of the police officers’ actions and the level of professional training and professional suitability of the police officers, including when preventing offenses and using firearms and special means, as well as to examine the efficiency of investigation of the consequences of the aforementioned events.
