The possibility of jail time for insulting Ukraine is being discussed

A suggestion has been made to the Parliament with regard to imposing criminal responsibility for public abuse of and insult to Ukraine as a sovereign state, as well as of the historical memory of Ukrainian people.

Member of Parliament Constantine Mateychenko is proposing to make such amendments to Article 338 of the Criminal Code, which provides the responsibility for abusing the state emblems. The appropriate bill #4029 “On amending the Criminal Code of Ukraine (regarding the assertion of the state’s authority)” was registered at the Verkhovna Rada last week.

The draft bill provides that a penalty of 50 non-taxable minimum citizen incomes, or arrest for up to six months, or imprisonment for up to three years.

The MP offers the country’s general situation as reasoning for his initiative. However, except for his contemplations in the explanatory note, he offers no explanation as to what is to be taken as an insult to Ukraine or an abuse of its historical memory.
